To our customers, collectors, historians, skeptics, picnic enthusiasts, and anyone currently zooming suspiciously into old photographs:
We would like to offer a sincere apology for any confusion caused by the recently circulated 1917 picnic photograph that appears to show possible evidence of time travel.
While we cannot confirm every detail of the image, we do feel obligated to clarify one thing: sometimes, while traveling through time and neighboring dimensions to retrieve rare apparel artifacts for Multiverse Mercantile, members of our acquisition team get caught up in the moment.
In this case, that moment may have involved a pleasant outdoor gathering, questionable sandwich preservation standards, and a garment that was absolutely not native to that year.
Our interdimensional retrieval process requires us to visit realities where fashion evolved differently, history took an odd left turn, or a single t-shirt changed the social order of an entire civilization. Most of the time, we operate discreetly. We enter, we curate, we recover the artifact, and we exit before anyone notices the scarf, jacket, logo, sleeve cut, fabric blend, or suspiciously modern posture.
Occasionally, however, the nexus miscalculates.
A portal opens near a picnic blanket. A field team member pauses to admire the local tailoring. Someone offers lemonade. A photographer appears. Before you know it, a perfectly routine apparel retrieval mission becomes “proof” of time travel more than a century later.
For that, we are sorry.
Please understand that Multiverse Mercantile takes temporal discretion very seriously. Since the incident, we have reminded all staff that historical photographs are not suitable places to linger, pose, snack, browse alternate catalogs, or explain moisture-wicking fabric technology to people who have not yet invented the phrase “performance tee.”
We also want to reassure the public that the timeline remains mostly intact. Any minor irregularities, such as unexplained clothing silhouettes, suspiciously relaxed travelers, or people in old photos who look like they know what Wi-Fi is, are being reviewed by our Chronological Quality Control Department.
To the people of 1917: thank you for the hospitality.
To modern readers: thank you for your patience.
To the individual in the photograph: please return the sample garment. It was not cleared for that reality.
Sincerely,
Jax
